Outdoor Recreation

The area's beautiful mountains, valleys, and rivers provide numerous outdoor recreation opportunities.

Appalachian Trail (Giles, VA) - The Appalachian Trail is one of the longest continuously marked footpath in the world, running from Georgia to Maine and measuring roughly 2,180 miles in length. The Trail goes through nearby Giles County, which is adjacent to Montgomery County. 

AppalachianAuburn Hills Golf Course - 18-hole course located at Auburn Hills Golf Club in Riner, features 6,534 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 71.9 and it has a slope rating of 127 on Bent grass.

Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course - A 9-hole course located in Blacksburg, features 2,731 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 35 . The course rating is 33.2 and it has a slope rating of 109.

Bisset Park (Radford, VA) - A 57 acre park located along the New River. The park offers walking trails, athletic fields, picnic shelters, children’s playground, a sand volleyball area and other opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Cascades National Recreation Trail (Giles County, VA) - This highly scenic, 4-mile round-trip trail meanders along a shaded mountain creek to a 66-foot waterfall within Jefferson National Forest. Hike is low to moderate difficulty. Picnicking area is at the beginning of the trail. Trout fishing in the Little Stony Creek.

Claytor Lake State Park (Pulaski County, VA) - It's an ideal setting for boating, swimming, camping, hiking and picnicking. Sport fishing is especially popular. Boating supplies, fuel and refreshments are available at the marina. Twelve cabins overlook the 4,500-acre lake.

Harkrader Sports Complex - Located behind the Christiansburg Middle School, the complex has three lighted multi-purpose fields, a press box, concessions area, and restrooms. There is also a walking path, tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables, and two playground areas. Harkrader Sports Complex will be the host site for the 2010 Dixie Boys World Series.

Huckleberry Trail - A paved trail extending from the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg to downtown Blacksburg. The trail is hidden from traffic with the exception of a few places that the trail crosses the street. The trail is great for biking, jogging or taking a leisurely walk.

Meadows Golf Course - An 18-hole course located in Christiansburg.

Mid-County Park - A 110 acre park located just outside of Christiansburg and Blacksburg. The park features the Frog Pond swimming pool, Golden Hill Disc Golf Course as well as walking trails and a playground for the kids.

Mountain Lake Nature Reserve (Giles County, VA) - Mountain top getaway just 30 minutes north of Blacksburg. Enjoy hiking, biking, tennis, wagon rides, outdoor recreation, family entertainment, educational programs for children, even dinner and breakfast--all included in your affordable room rate.

Nellie’s Cave Park - 10 acre park in Blacksburg featuring a soccer field, basketball court, T-ball field, playground, horshoe pits, picnic tables/shelters, barbecue grills, bleachers, benches, walking trails & restroooms.

New River Junction - Located along the historic New River, the New River Junction features tubing, camping, fishing and live music at Big Falls Park.

New River Trail State Park (Pulaski, County) - A "Rails to Trails" project, the New River Trail State Park meanders through southwestern Virginia and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and boating on or near the trail. The park entrances located nearest to Montgomery County are approximately 30 minutes away in Pulaski County and include the "Draper" and "Pulaski/Xaloy" entrances.

Pandapas Pond - An 8-acre man-made pond located along Route 460, just north of Blacksburg. It features warm-water fishing and canoeing. A one-mile circuit trail goes around the pond, and several other popular Jefferson Nat'l. Forest trails connect to it.

Poverty Creek Trail System - Located near Pandapas Pond, the Poverty Creek Trail System features over 17 miles of trails that traverse Brush and Gap Mountains. The trails offer a variety of experiences and levels of difficulty. Hiking is permitted on all trails. Mountain biking and horse riding is permitted on all trails, except those in the immediate area around Pandapas Pond.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park (Bedford County, VA) - The 20,000-acre lake with 500 miles of shoreline offers more than 1,500 acres, hiking trails, picnic areas and ranger programs, such as guided night hikes and canoe.

Virginia Tech Duckpond - A perfect place to picnic, the duck pond has picnic tables, park benches and a gazebo. It is located on the Virginia Tech Campus in Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech Golf Course (Pulaski County) - A 9-hole course located along the New River, featuring 6,448 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 70.0 and it has a slope rating of 108 on Blue grass.
