ABOUT MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Montgomery County Public School District (MCPS) serves 9,700 students in grades K-12. There are 22 schools in the county’s four attendance areas, including 12 elementary, four middle, four high, and two secondary alternative schools. Schools within the division vary in size and are located in both urban and rural settings.
Construction of several new school buildings has been prominently in the forefront in planning for the future of public schools in Montgomery County. From 1998 to 2011, Montgomery County will have invested $115.3 Million in the construction of seven new schools (three elementary, three middle, and one high school).

- All MCPS secondary schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commonwealth of Virginia
- NAMM Foundation named MCPS one of the "Best Communities for Music Education" (2009)
- Blacksburg High School is consistently named on Newsweek list of "America's Top Public High Schools", with its highest ranking of 164 given in 2003

Virginia Preschool Initiative - MCPS operates a family-focused preschool program for four-year old children. Preschool programs are located in nine elementary schools in Montgomery County:
Elementary Education Program is crafted to the student develop knowledge and understandings of themselves and their world in a safe and nurturing environment. Instruction in the K-5 program engages student in meaningful activities that support their learning and application of skills in mathematics, science, history and social studies, health and physical education, language arts, and fine arts.
Middle School Education Program adheres to the philosophy that young adolescents grow and mature in a caring an supportive environment through exploration and guided experimentation. These programs include a continued emphasis on the core curriculum (english, math, science, and social studies) with opportunities for elective and exploratory classes. Students have the opportunity to begin taking high school credit courses in math and foreign languages. All students benefit from advisor/advisee activities, team teaching and interdisciplinary instruction.
High School Education Program is comprehensive in that it provides a wide range of opportunities for students. High school courses prepare students for post-secondary education and entry into the workforce. In some courses, students also may receive dual enrollment credit, earn national certifications, participate in cooperative work experiences, and job shadow for a day in local businesses.

Career Project Lead The Way (PLTW) | Is a four-year program that offers MCPS
students interested in engineering, biomechanics, aeronautics, and other
applied math and science arenas a dynamic high school program that
incorporates real-world learning and hands-on experience. The combination
of traditional math and science courses with innovative Pathway To Engineering
courses prepares students for college majors in engineering and E/T fields
and offers them the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.
Career Pathways | Allows MCPS students to earn college credit through New
River Community College while still in high school.
Adult Education Programs enables adults to:
Acquire the basic skills for literacy functioning and meeting family and
community responsibilities;
Obtain sufficient education to benefit from job training or retaining programs;
Continue education to at least the completion of the secondary school level.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) | Instructional programs that provide basic skills for
adults who are performing below the ninth grade level in reading, writing and
math.
General Education Development (GED) Testing Program | A local program that
provides GED instruction for individuals who wish to take the GED test. The GED
test, offered several times during the year requires successful completion of a
batter of five comprehensive examinations in writing, reading, science, social
studies, and math.
Adult High School Diploma Program | A program that enables an adult to
complete his/her required courses in English and social studies to obtain
a high school diploma.
English as a Second Language (ESL) | Instructional Program that provides basic
and advanced English as a Second Language courses to adults who are not
native speakers of English.
